Norman T. Lopes, Jr., 70, of Dartmouth died April 8, 2013 at St. Luke’s Hospital after a long battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease). He was the husband of Geraldine A. Perry-Lopes. Born in Acushnet, the son of the late Norman T. and Lillian E. (Berube) Lopes, he lived in New Bedford before moving to Dartmouth in 1991. Mr. Lopes was a member of Grace Episcopal Church. He was formerly employed by Raytheon for over 30 years until his retirement. Mr. Lopes served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and later served over 15 years in the U.S. Coast Guard Reserves. He loved music and was a die-hard Boston Red Sox fan. Survivors include his wife; 2 sons, Bryan Lopes and his wife Carolyn of Marietta, GA and Christopher Lopes and his wife Nina of San Francisco, CA; a step-son, Mark Surprenant and his wife Debra of Marion; a step-daughter, Jennifer Tavares of Dartmouth; a brother, Russell Lopes and his wife Marcelle of New Bedford; his aunt, Lucille Dupont of New Bedford; 5 grandchildren, Jessica Lopes, Eric Lopes, Matthew Tavares, Nicolas Surprenant and Lauren Surprenant; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Alan Lopes. His arrangements are incomplete.

Jeanne (Gauthier) Vieira, 87, of Dartmouth, passed away Thursday, April 11, 2013 at Kindred Transitional Care & Rehabilitation – Crawford in Fall River. She was the wife of the late Frank G. Vieira, Jr. Daughter of the late George E. and Mary V. (Raulet) Gauthier, she was born in New Bedford and had resided in Dartmouth for most of her life. Mrs. Vieira was a member of the Holy Ghost Society of Horseneck, enjoyed embroidery and baking, as well as spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Survivors include her 2 sons: Eugene E. Vieira of Fairhaven and Michael J. Vieira of New Bedford; her 3 daughters: Shirley A. Hogan and Joanne M. Sousa, both of Dartmouth and Patricia A.Vieira of Plymouth; 2 brothers: George E. Gauthier and Leon Gauthier both of Dartmouth; several grandchildren, great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Mrs. Vieira was the mother of the late Lorraine L. Vieira and sister of the late Jules O. Gauthier. Memorial service information to be announced at a later date. Born in Fall River, Mrs. Smith worked as a Paraprofessional in the field of Special Education. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. Survivors along with her husband are her parents John and Eleanor (Silveria) Portella of Fall River as well as her son Wesley Smith and his companion Rebecca Belanger of Dartmouth. Muriel C. (Lemieux) Natho, 90, of Dartmouth died April 19, 2013 at St. Luke’s Hospital after a period of declining health. She was the wife of the late E. Carl Natho. Born in Dartmouth, the daughter of the late Joseph F. and Blanche A. (Turner) Lemieux, she lived in Dartmouth most of her life. Mrs. Natho was a communicant of Holy Name of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. She served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Survivors include her 2 sons, Carl M. “Skip” Natho and his wife Angela of New Bedford; and Brad Natho and his wife Mary Kay of Taunton; 3 grandchildren, Christopher Natho, Joseph Natho and his wife Cristin and Andrew Natho. She was the mother of the late Glenn J. Natho and the sister of the late Mark Lemieux and Doris Buchholz. Inese M. (Fornaciari) Almeida, 93, of Dartmouth died May 1, 2013 peacefully at her daughter’s home. She was the wife of the late Charles Almeida. Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Mariano and Catherine (Pizzuti) Fornaciari, she lived in New Bedford before moving to Dartmouth in 1966. Mrs. Almeida was a communicant of St. Julie Billiart Church since the founding of the parish. She was formerly employed by Cerel’s Jewelry Store and Peerless Department Store. Mrs. Almeida was a charter member of the Sons of Italy in New Bedford. She enjoyed gourmet cooking and outings with family and friends. Survivors include her daughter, Catherine Michaud and her husband Robert of Dartmouth; a grandson, Charles L. Michaud, and his wife Vicki, of Westport; a great-granddaughter, Emma Catherine-Elizabeth Michaud; and a nephew, Mark Fornaciari and his companion Barbara Brittain. Alice K.V. (Wheatley) Alfonso, 98, of Dartmouth died Friday May 10, 2013 at the Oaks Nursing Home. She was the wife of the late Eugene Alfonso.

Born in Bermuda, the daughter of the late Alfred and Marie (Johnstone) Wheatley, she lived in New Bedford and Dartmouth for most of her life.

She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church.

Mrs. Alfonso was formerly employed by the Cornell-Dubilier Electronics Corporation. She later worked in the kitchen at the Bristol Nursing Home.

Survivors include three children, Joan M. Walker and her husband John, and David Alfonso and his wife Sharlene, all of Dartmouth, and Bernard E. Alfonso and his wife Gail of California; a sister, Barbara Woollard of England; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

She was the grandmother of the late Scott Alfonso and Irene LaPlante, and sister of the late Alfred Wheatley, Robert Wheatley, Florence Baptiste, Helena Marshall, Leola Pedro, and Betty Marshall.

Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 AM at St. Mary’s Church, South Dartmouth. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery. John Beetle Baumann 2/27/2013 Dartmouth, MA

NEW BEDFORD — John Beetle Baumann passed away in this city after a short illness on February 27th, 2013. He was the husband of the late Lucille Breault Baumann. He was born in South Boston on March 20, 1919, to the late Helen Amelia (Beetle) Baumann, and John Michael Baumann. He was preceded in death by a brother, Walter (NMI) Baumann, sisters, Helen Margret Baumann and Anna R. (Baumann) Harrison. A lifelong carpenter, his early work experience included working for his grandfather Charles Beetle in the family boatyard in New Bedford, and also with Ben Dobson, the noted naval architect. During World War II, he volunteered to join the newly formed 28th Naval Construction Battalion (SEABEES) in Rhode Island and participated in operations at Sicily, Corsica, Sardinia, and later the South of France earning several recognitions and commendations for individual and unit actions. He returned to this area where he worked in the Carpenters Union until retirement having worked at and supervised numerous construction projects including the New Bedford Airport, Tifereth Israel Jewish Synagogue, and Bishop Stang High School. He is survived by son, Michael John Baumann of Colleyville Texas, his wife Lori, and children, Rhiannon Amber, Jennifer Marie, Melani Veronica, and John Phillip, and Charles Maurice Baumann, Lt. Colonel USAF (Ret) of Schertz, Texas, his wife Donna, and their children, Scott Charles and Amy Kristine. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the New Bedford Whaling Museum or to the charity of your choice. Visitation will take place on Sunday from 4-6 p.m. in the Wilson Chapel, 479 County St., New Bedford. His service will be at the funeral home on Monday at 10 a.m. followed by burial in Rural Cemetery.

Tamara Jannell (Dahlheimer) Bachstein, 71, of Dartmouth passed away Thursday February 28, 2013 at St. Luke’s Hospital surrounded by her family. She was the wife of Richard Bachstein. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of the late Elroy and Mildred (Dahlheimer) Ratz, she lived in the St. Louis area for most of her life before moving to Dartmouth nine years ago. Tammy was a long term executive with Sears Roebuck Co. in St. Louis until her retirement. She loved antiques and time spent with her husband scouting out treasures at garage sales and antique marts. She loved the Boston Red Sox, the St. Louis Cardinals, and the New England Patriots. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and watching all of her birds at the feeders. She often spent time talking with all of her old friends to keep up on all of the gossip in St. Louis. She will be sorely missed by all who knew her. Her family would like to thank the staff of St. Luke’s Hospital for the loving care given to Tammy during her illness. She is survived by her husband; a son, Michael Bachstein and his fiancée, Robin Vigeant; and two grandchildren, Noah and Chloe Bachstein. Born in Assonet, the son of the late John and Minnie (Dandan) DeAndrade, he lived in New Bedford most of his life. Mr. DeAndrade was formerly employed as a maintenance man at Our Lady of the Assumption Church for 30 years until his retirement. Mr. DeAndrade served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the United Social Club. Elinor “Ellie” C. (McLeod) Beanland, 88, of South Dartmouth died Saturday, May 25, 2013, at Brandon Woods of Dartmouth. She was the wife of the late David Beanland.

Born in Middleboro, July 10, 1924, she was the daughter of the late George McLeod and Dorothy (Isackson) McLeod. She lived in South Dartmouth for many years and was a long-time member of the Congregational Church of South Dartmouth.

She was a graduate of Memorial High School in Middleboro and St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing. She spent most of her 42-year nursing career at St. Luke’s in Pediatrics where she became the well-known Supervisor of the Lumbard Children’s Ward. She will long be remembered for her outstanding contributions to the Hospital and for the special caring she gave to so many people. Ellie was a warm and loving person with a sense of humor who would go to great lengths to make people happy, especially children. She had many friends and wonderful neighbors who were very special to her.

She was a member of the St. Luke’s Retirees Club, St. Luke’s Volunteers, St. Luke’s Auxiliary and the New Bedford Garden Club. Ellie enjoyed gardening, arts & crafts, creating floral arrangements, entertaining and traveling throughout this country and Europe.

She is survived by her dear niece, Phyllis Ripley of Tucson, AZ and her nephew, George B. McLeod, of Benson, AZ. She also leaves her loving “caregivers,” William M. Harrop and Hilda Harrop, of Mattapoisett, MA.

She was the sister of the late George Collin McLeod and Phyllis McLeod.

Her Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2013 at 10 AM at the he Congregational Church of South Dartmouth, 17 Middle St. South Dartmouth, MA.

Thomas H. Flynn, M.D., 93, of Dartmouth, passed away, peacefully and with dignity Friday, May 24, 2013 at Charlton Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Amelia (Salles) Flynn.

Born in Peabody, MA, the son the late Cornelius J. and Nora A. (McNamara) Flynn, he was a graduate of St. John’s Prep School, St. Anselm College and Tufts University Medical School in 1945. While in Medical School, he was commissioned a Lieutenant on active duty in the United States Navy. The day after graduating Medical School, he married Amelia, who remained the love of his life for more than seventy years.

After serving his medical internship in California, he and Amelia returned to the Boston area, to further his medical training at the Chelsea Naval Hospital and Boston City Hospital. During this period, he also served as U.S. Naval Medical Office aboard ship in the North Atlantic.

In his mid thirties, he and Amelia settled in Dartmouth, MA and he began what was a very busy and successful, private practice in Obstetrics and Gynecology in the New Bedford area. He was well respected among patients and colleagues for his skill, dedication, compassion and wit. He was proud to have delivered thousands of babies and especially honored to have delivered five of his grandchildren.

Dr. Flynn loved life and lived it fully. In his early years, while not in school, he helped his father and brothers, with the trucking and livery business, which his father started and successfully ran for many years. During these years, he learned to ride horseback while working in the local stable. He thoroughly enjoyed riding and became an accomplished rider and participated in many horse shows and steeple jumping events. He was even honored to to be chosen to ride with several polo teams when they were short a team member. He proudly and with humor, recalled those events into his later days. During these years he also learned to play golf, while working at the local course. While in college, due to his high academic achievement, he earned the honor of being chosen to receive training as a pilot for the U.S. Military. During those years he thoroughly enjoy flying “his plane” and late into his life he happily reminisced about his flying adventures.

During his years of active medical practice, he enjoyed sailing, both competitive racing and cruising, with friends and family aboard. He enjoyed offshore sailing to Bermuda, Halifax and through the Caribbean and the waters from Florida to Maine. He loved being in the mountains of New England, and enjoyed many years downhill skiing the slopes of Cannon Mountain with his family. He cross country skied the trails of Bretton Woods well into his seventies. He was an active tennis player and later in his retirement years, spent in Punta Gorda, FL, he returned to the golf course. He was an avid reader and enjoyed reading about his Irish ancestry, of which he was very proud. He was active member of The New Bedford Yacht Club and the Wamsutta Club. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Dartmouth.
Survivors include his wife; 3 sons, Thomas K. Flynn and his wife Ingrid of Newport, RI, John F. Flynn of Dartmouth and Paul M. Flynn and his wife Wendy of Essex, CT; 2 daughters, Amy F. Hood of Taunton and Nancy F. Siegal and her husband Henry of Hopkinton, MA; 5 grandchildren, Charles Siegal and his wife Meghan, David Siegal, Annie Pappenfort and her husband Graham, Alexandra Sowell and Ellie Flynn; 7 great-grandchildren, Sally, Walter and Louisa Siegal, Henry and Frederick Pappenfort, Averie and Crosby Sowell; and several nieces and nephews.
He was the grandfather of the late Patrick Flynn and the brother of the late Mary Flynn, Leonard Flynn and Cornelius Flynn, Jr.

Elizabeth Wildes, 94, of Dartmouth, passed away Saturday, June 8, 2013 at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. She was the wife of Horace B. Wildes, whom she had been married to for 70 years.
Born in New Bedford, daughter of the late Arthur and Bertha (Doe) Smith, she was a lifelong resident of Dartmouth. Mrs. Wildes was the founder of the St. Luke’s Medical Library at St. Luke’s Hospital and prior to her retirement, worked there as a librarian for 38 years. She was the one of the co-founders of the former Dartmouth Children’s Museum, a member of Allen’s Neck Friends Meeting and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.
Survivors along with her husband include 3 sons: Frederick W. Wildes and his wife Patricia of Manchester, CT; Peter D. Wildes and his wife Julia of Washougal, WA and Stephen B. Wildes and his wife Donna of Lawrenceville, IL; 5 grandchildren: Jennifer and Matt Payne, Nathan Wildes, David Wildes, Sarah and James Livermore and Daniel Wildes; 2 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
She was the grandmother of the late Lisa E. Wildes.
A memorial service to which relatives and friends are invited will be Saturday, June 15, 2013 at Allen’s Neck Friends Meeting on Horseneck Road in Dartmouth at 11:00 A.M.
Interment will be private.

DARTMOUTH — Irene C. Tansey passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 6, 2013, at the age of 92.

Irene lived in Dartmouth for more than sixty years with her husband, the late Thomas E. Tansey. One of four daughters and two sons of Andre and Laurina Fontaine, she grew up in the South End of New Bedford, where she enjoyed sailing, swimming, and helping out at the family business, Fontaine’s Pharmacy.

After attending college in Texas, Irene moved to Washington, D.C. during World War II, where she worked at the U. S. Surgeon General’s office. She returned to New Bedford after the war, where she and her husband raised their family.

Irene worked for more than 20 years at Monroe International, but she will be remembered most for all of her volunteer work and generosity. She was an avid painter, and loved to do watercolors of the New Bedford waterfront and Padanaram Harbor. Her family and friends also fondly remember her annual Christmas Eve parties, which she hosted for nearly 50 years.

She is survived by her sister, Eveline Pilkington of Bourne; her son, Thomas A. Tansey and his wife, Diane of Ashburn, VA; her daughter, Maureen Fanning and her husband, Hugh of Dartmouth, MA; and by a number of nieces, nephews and grandchildren who will miss her dearly.

Irene was predeceased by her daughter, Patricia Tansey, for whom she dedicated many years of support and care.

Her memorial service will take place on Saturday, June 15th in the First Unitarian Church, Union and Eighth Sts., New Bedford at 9:30 a.m., followed by burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

It is suggested remembrances be made in her name to Friends of Buttonwood Park Commemorative Tree Program, P.O. Box 2011, New Bedford, Ma. 02741.

Kristafer M. Fonseca, 19, of Dartmouth died June 11, 2013 unexpectedly at home.
Born in New Bedford, the son of Sheena K. (Garcia) Fonseca of Dartmouth and the late Robert J. Fonseca, he lived in New Bedford and Dartmouth all of his life.
He was employed by Walmart in Dartmouth.
Survivors include his mother; 3 brothers, Garit Fonseca of Dartmouth, Gil DeCosta of Boston and Gustin Froias of New Bedford; 5 sisters, Roberta Fonseca of Westport, Windy Monteiro of Dartmouth and Rona Nelson, Katy-Lynn DeCosta and Peggy Reis, all of New Bedford; his girlfriend, Samantha Botelho; his aunt, Susan Silva of New Bedford and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was the grandson of the late Catherine DeCosta.
His Funeral Service will be held on Monday, June 17th at 11 AM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Sunday, June 16th from 4-8 PM.

Carol A. (Raymond) Gifford, 93, of Dartmouth died at home on Sunday June 16, 2013. She was the wife of the late William Gifford.

Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Alfred O. and Lillian H. (Avery) Raymond, she lived in Fairhaven for many years before moving to Dartmouth.

Mrs. Gifford was formerly employed as a school teacher for the New Bedford Public School Department until her retirement.

She was a graduate of Fairhaven High School. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Rivier College, and her Master’s degree from Bridgewater State College.

Survivors include several cousins.

She was the sister of the late Gladys L. Raymond.
